Frequently Asked Questions

What is a combi boiler?
A combined high-efficiency water heater and central heating boiler. Hot water is heated on demand and delivered at mains pressure.
What are the new building regulations governing condensing boilers?

Effective 1 April 2005

Domestic gas boilers installed must be high effiiency condensing boliers rated A or B (SEDBUK rating).

Minimum requirements for heating controls must be met.

Installers must be Corgi registered and trained in energy efficiency and the new condensing boiler Building Regulations.

On completion of installation the householder receives a certificate from the local authority confirming that the boiler complies with the new regulations.

Other types of boilers will only be installed where it is not feasible to fit a condensing boiler.

What is a condensing boiler?
The term condensing is derived from the creation of condensation within the boiler or flue system. A condensing boiler is more efficient as it is able to extract more heat from the gas used. The combustion gases are cooled, water vapour condenses and aditional heat is captured and transfered to the home.
What are SEDBUK ratings?

Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK. Developed under the Government's Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme - it provides a basis for fair comparison of different models.

It measures the average annual efficiency in typical domestic conditions.

Central heating boilers come with a SEDBUK rating - all Worcester Bosch Greenstar Condensing Boilers are rated A (90% and above efficiency).

What is a system boiler?

A system boiler differs from a regular boiler as many individual components of the heating and hot water system are built in.

Hot water is pumped from the boiler through the system which results in faster response and gives cost savings.

Works on the principle of stored hot water.

What is a regular boiler?
Conventional system incorporating a boiler and controls, feed and expansion cistern and a hot water cylinder fed from a loft situated cold water cistern.
