New Government regulations
(to prevent pollution and protect waterways) apply to all oil storage
installations. Failure to comply may result in fine of up to £20,000
and liability for cleanup costs: -
Oil tanks in
commercial, industrial, agricultural and institutional premises must
bunded (A “bunded tank” is a tank that has a double skin – in effect
it is a tank within a tank).
Domestic oil tanks with a
capacity greater than 2500 litres OR are classed as a significant risk
must be bunded.
Tank with significant
risk: -
Located within 10 metres
of controlled water, is stream, river, lake, pond, ditch etc.
Located where spillage
could run into an open drain or to a loose fitting manhole cover.
Located within 50 metres
of a well, borehole or spring.
Located over hard ground
or hard surfaced ground that could enable a spillage to reach
controlled water. |
